Career Development for Released Academy Players
The Phoenix Foundation UK works with released professional Football academy players connecting elite young talent with careers in advertising, media, marketing and Football coaching.
The Phoenix Foundation UK: Career Pathways for Released Academy Footballers
Every year, more than 10,000 young footballers are released from professional academies across England — and 99% of them will never play the game professionally. These are talented, disciplined young people who have spent years training to elite standards, only to find themselves, almost overnight, without the structure, identity, or direction football once gave them.
The Phoenix Foundation UK exists to make sure that release from a football academy is the start of a new chapter, not the end of the story. We work directly with players and their families to build genuine, structured pathways into life after football — supporting them through two distinct routes.
Our employment pathway helps released players transition into careers in advertising, media and marketing, drawing on real industry relationships and a deep understanding of what these sectors look for in entry-level talent.
Our coaching pathway supports players who want to stay connected to the game, guiding them from grassroots-level coaching qualifications all the way through to UEFA badges, with real, paid coaching opportunities along the way.
Every player we work with goes through a personal, structured onboarding process — built around understanding who they are beyond football, what they're genuinely good at, and which direction will give them a real future. Across London, 48% of 16–24 year olds are economically inactive, and nationally, 957,000 young people are NEET — not in education, employment, or training — the highest figure in over a decade. Many of them are former academy players who simply weren't given a structured next step. The Phoenix Foundation UK is that next step.
If you're a parent, a player, a football club, or an organisation interested in partnering with us, we'd love to hear from you.

What We Do
Every year, thousands of young people are released from professional football academies with no career pathway waiting for them. The Phoenix Foundation exists to change that — we operate with the precision of a professional placement firm and the purpose of a social enterprise.
Clear Pathways Forward
Employment Pathway
Placing players into professional careers in advertising, media and marketing. Their discipline, work ethic, willingness to learn, team experience and adaptability under pressure makes them outstanding candidates.
Coaching Pathway
Qualifying players as football coaches from grassroots level through to UEFA badges — turning elite sport experience into a professional coaching career.
First Placement Made
The Phoenix Foundation UK has already demonstrated the model works. Our first placement is live, our employer relationships are active and our pipeline of released academy players is growing. This is a proven proposition, not a concept.
